In addition to standard medical treatments, The David C. Pratt Cancer Center offers a wide range of Integrative healing services for patients. Services offered include acupuncture, chiropractic, auriculotherapy, lymphedema, massage therapy, physical therapy, speech therapy and wellness classes. These services are intended to help patients treat the whole person from a body, mind and spiritual perspective. Many of these therapies are used to help patients reduce and manage symptom of side effects related to their medical treatments along with assisting patients in the management of stress, anxiety and/or depression and to help improve the overall quality of life.
Acupuncture is provided to help relieve common side effects of cancer treatment such as nausea, pain and fatigue. This Chinese technique has been used for more than 2,000 years to promote natural healing. Acupuncture is beneficial as it has no side effects and is relatively painless. Other common conditions treated using acupuncture include low back pain, arthritis, headaches, xerostomia (dry mouth), carpal tunnel syndrome and tendonitis/bursitis. Auriculotherapy uses the same traditional ear acupuncture points however; a
probe is used to stimulate the points by delivering an electric current to specific
points in the ear related to various conditions instead of the use of needles. This
technique is most commonly used for smoking cessation however, can also be

Nursing care and therapies are provided for adults with medical or rehabilitative needs. Trained nurses and therapists provide quality care in the areas of oncology, cardiopulmonary, orthopedics, wound/ostomy and intravenous therapy. Medicare, Medicaid and most private insurance companies allow their members to receive services when medical care and recovery is needed at home (link to /services/homecare) under the supervision of a physician. St. John's Mercy Home Care offers a specialized Palliative Care program. The Palliative Care team of nurses, social workers and chaplains focus on alleviating pain, symptoms and suffering, while giving additional support to the patient and their family due to a chronic or life-limiting illness. St. John's Mercy Home Infusion Therapy is dedicated to delivering the highest quality intravenous, injectable and subcutaneous infusion therapy services to adult and pediatric patients. Full clinical pharmacy and nursing support, ongoing teaching for patients and caregivers, and flexible referral options gives you the confidence to choose St. John's Mercy for home infusion care. Starting with the initial referral, the patient receives individualized care and attention from our infusion team of pharmacists and nurses. St. John's Mercy Hospice strives to provide every patient with the highest quality of life possible. At the heart of the hospice is a dedicated interdisciplinary team, comprised of nurses, aides, social workers, chaplains and volunteers. Together, they create a warm and compassionate atmosphere at home or in a familiar setting where patients can live and die peacefully among family and friends. The hospice's medical, emotional and spiritual support allows patients to spend their last days in dignity. Lymphedema involves manual therapy, compression bandaging, exercise and patient education to help control edema. The service assists with edema related to surgical removal of lymph nodes or destruction of lymphatic pathways due to trauma, surgery, radiation or scarring. A licensed massage therapist is available to provide individual massages to promote both healing and relaxation. Our therapists are trained in a variety of soft-tissue techniques.
