St. John's Mercy

Breast cancer is cancer which starts in the breast. The most common type of breast cancer begins in the lining of the ducts and is called ductal carcinoma. Any person may develop breast cancer however it is most common in women. There are breast cancer risk factors that may increase the likelihood of developing breast cancer such as smoking and environmental factors. Some of the breast cancer risk factors cannot be changed, such as gender and aging, but mammograms, self-breast exams and routine physician visits are all ways for early breast cancer detection.

There are several types of breast cancer, including ductal carcinoma, the most common breast cancer type, and lobular carcinoma, the second most common breast cancer type, which occurs in the lobules (milk-producing glands).

Breast cancer treatments involve the clinical care of a physician and other healthcare professionals. The Breast Center at St. John’s Mercy is a full-service center offering women all breast cancer diagnostic procedures – including mammograms, breast ultrasounds and breast biopsies – in one place. St. John’s Mercy’s professional teams of Oncologist and healthcare professionals offer care and treatment to St. John’s Mercy breast cancer patients.
